2016 marks the 22nd year of Carnivale, a variety of food will be available to try with Carnivale utilising famous celebrity chef events, food sampling, and showcasing local produce.

New for 2016, Port Douglas Carnivale will host Wonderland Spiegeltent which will be the main Carnivale hub, holding a huge variety of exciting new events. Wonderland Spiegltent is a Dutch term for “mirror tent”, they are Belgian travelling dance halls that will illustrate their opulent and nostalgic ambiance with colourful stained glass windows and warm wood furnishings. The Wonderland Spiegeltent will also have exhibitions showing an exciting physical circus, tantalising cabaret, blazing burlesque and sidesplitting comedy acts.

The program also features a range of family friendly events devoted to arts, sports, fun, food and frivolity.

Foodie events such as the ‘Paradise on a Plate’ Longest Lunch, the ‘Port on Fork’ Food and Wine Festival will return in 2016 along with many more favourites.

Yabusame-horse archery

The Family Beach Day will again feature the amazing Yabusame Japanese horseback archery tournament, a colourful and exciting spectacle that thrilled viewers when it made its Australian debut in 2014.

A street art and music festival will bring the heart of Macrossan Street to life with buskers and artists, singers and dancers performing for the enjoyment of passersby.

Originally held to mark the start of the sugar cane harvesting season, Carnivale is now considered more as marking the opening of the tourism season.

It brings the local community and visitors together and is proudly supported by the Douglas Shire Council, Douglas Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Port Douglas and Daintree and Tourism Events Queensland.

Originally established in 1994, the modern Carnivale was held over one long weekend with a series of events in celebration for the beginning of the Sugar Cane Season. Held in the last two weeks of May each year, Carnivale is now a ten day extravaganza of food & wine, sports, arts and musical festivals all rolled into one and is now known more so as the “opening of the tourist season”, and is proudly supported by the Douglas Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Port Douglas Daintree, Tourism Events Queensland and the hard working Carnivale Committee.
