Yabusame-horse archery

The Family Beach Day will again feature the amazing Yabusame Japanese horseback archery tournament, a colourful and exciting spectacle that thrilled viewers when it made its Australian debut in 2014.

A street art and music festival will bring the heart of Macrossan Street to life with buskers and artists, singers and dancers performing for the enjoyment of passersby.

Originally held to mark the start of the sugar cane harvesting season, Carnivale is now considered more as marking the opening of the tourism season.

It brings the local community and visitors together and is proudly supported by the Douglas Shire Council, Douglas Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Port Douglas and Daintree and Tourism Events Queensland.

Originally established in 1994, the modern Carnivale was held over one long weekend with a series of events in celebration for the beginning of the Sugar Cane Season. Held in the last two weeks of May each year, Carnivale is now a ten day extravaganza of food & wine, sports, arts and musical festivals all rolled into one and is now known more so as the “opening of the tourist season”, and is proudly supported by the Douglas Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Port Douglas Daintree, Tourism Events Queensland and the hard working Carnivale Committee.

Carnivale is a time for celebration, it’s a time to unwind, relax and soak up the ambience of our tropical seaside paradise. It is the ideal festival for families, for food & wine lovers, sporting enthusiasts, fans of “grass roots music”, couples and street artists.

Carnivale is an event the whole region benefits from, and one that brings both the local community and our welcome visitors together.

General Manager Ken Dobbs expects the 2016 event to raise the bar even higher than previoud years with the new attractions. We can’t wait to share it with you so come to Port Douglas for the weekend, a week or maybe the whole ten days… everyday is a festival and you’re just going to love it!
